The title’s a lie: It’s a really dangerous house!

The Pitch: A low-level CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) babysitting a lonely safe house in South Africa gets swept up in an international conspiracy when a legendary rogue agent (Denzel Washington) is brought in for questioning.

What It Really Is: An enjoyable international spy movie with lots of fast chases, explosions and Bourne-like hand-to-hand fights. We’ve seen the story many times before--the CIA is full of corrupt pricks who kill people to protect their corrupt-ness--and the director completely rips off Tony Scott’s style...as well as his go-to lead actor (Scott and Washington have made 5 movies together). But it’s a high quality action movie that kept us awake, so that’s good enough for us.

This Is Nora Arnezeder: She was born in France and there’s not nearly enough of her in this movie.

Does Blu-ray Make a Difference? A bit. It’s really grainy and the director loves getting way too close on the actors and the action. You can almost smell them.

Special Features: U-Control picture-in-picture track; “Universal Second Screen Experience,” which works through the pocket BLU app and your tablet or computer; “Making Safe House,” “Hand-to-Hand Action,” “Shooting the Safe House Attack,” “Building the Rooftop Chase,” “Behind the Action, “Inside the CIA,” “Safe Harbor: Cape Town,” DVD and UltraViolet digital copy of the film.
