Hot on the reels of 1993 mega-blockbuster Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg took the safe route for his next project and tackled the Holocaust. But the legendary director effectively swapped science for sentience with Schindler’s List and walked away impressing more than just the Academy. Now the film’s first trip to DVD features even more historical perspective, beginning with a brief written biography of Oskar Schindler’s life and continuing with profiles of the survivors he helped. The hour-plus featurette, “Voices From the List,” interviews the survivors about how they met up with Schindler during World War II. A brief feature on Spielberg’s Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, which contains over 52,000 videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors, concludes the history lesson. This isn’t Friday night date material, but if you’re going to get schooled, why not learn from the man who brought you friendly extraterrestrials and whip-toting archaeologists?
