Semi-Pro: 2-Disc Unrated "Let's Get Sweaty" Edition

Release Date:
06/03/2008
Star Rating:
★½
The Skinny:Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) is the owner/coach/power forward for an ABA team trying to earn its way into the NBA by staging dance routines and trading for a washed-up former all-star (Woody Harrelson). It's set in the '70s, but don't worry about remembering that, because there are a thousand corny retro jokes to remind you in every scene.

Reminded Us Of…The whole thing seems a little familiar. Wasn't there another movie where a struggling local sports team led by its aging coach put on a long series of wacky publicity stunts in order to save its precious team? Oh, right. It was called Slap Shot, and it was about a thousand times better than Semi-Pro.

The Good:Not shoehorning this into a PG-13 rating gave Will Ferrell free reign to yell curses at the top of his lungs, which still hasn't gotten that old.

The Bad: With so many funny people like Andy Richter, Will Arnett, David Koechner, and Woody Harrelson on board, we expected to laugh so hard we would pee, but what we got was a 100-minute SNL sketch. And not the good SNL from the '90s, either.

Best Extra: There are more than 15 minutes of deleted scenes, including some improv stuff that's good for a few chuckles. There's also a short Bill Walton set visit, which is like watching a shaved yeti rummage around the back lots at New Line.
