Spider-Man's third time around isn't nearly as bad as everyone claimed, but it won't get your spidey sense tingling either. Toby Maguire looks asleep and waiting to cash a huge paycheck as he battles poorly used villains Sandman, Venom, Green Goblin Jr., and Mary Jane. (She may not be a villain, but she definitely isn't good.) Rather than basing a great story around the action like they did in the first two movies, this does the opposite by just tossing moments of action into an otherwise mediocre drama. The much-anticipated black suit doesn't really turn Spidey into a bad guy; it turns him into a greasy goth who provides a lot of unintentional laughs. It's like director Sam Rami got bored with the franchise, tried to experiment, and it didn't work out as planned. We give props to Thomas Haden Church as the troubled Sandman, who could have rivaled Doc Ock if they had given him the chance. The upsides on DVD are all the great special effects extras on the second disc. Too bad there's not a separate cut of the movie where they cut out all the trite speeches and dancing.
