Although Tom Hanks is listed as one of its producers, Starter for 10 is British to its core—and terrific fun in any accent. A funny, romantic, seriously smart comedy, this one will make stars out of James McAvoy (The Chronicles of Narnia, The Last King of Scotland) and his superhot female costars Alice Eve and Rebecca Hall if there is any justice. Working-class stiff Brian tries to make his way at an upper-crust university by getting on the team for the college quiz show, an English version of Jeopardy!. The film actually gets its name from a game show term. This is a guy who is full of answers to just about everything, except how to deal with his personal life, which he pretty much screws up when he is torn between a voluptuous blonde coed teammate and a smarter, politically oriented brunette. For a guy who has the right response to every question posed, he somehow forgot to read the book on how to score with women. Adding to his plight is the competitive team captain, who finds Brian a threat and looks to undermine him. Ultimately Starter for 10, which is based on the David Nicholls best-selling coming-of-age book, is about a guy who thinks he knows it all but is just beginning to learn it's what he doesn't know that really matters. Do yourself a big favor and put this movie at the top of your must-see list.
