It’s a simple fact: Americans keep getting fatter, yet the waistband on Ronald McDonald’s clown pants stays exactly the same. How does he do it? Super Size Me seeks the truth, and instead of assaulting you with (mal)nutritional information on Big Macs and cherry pies, director and human lab rat Morgan Spurlock investigates by eating nothing but McDonald’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for 30 days. And the results are about as pretty as a week-old Filet-o-Fish. Weight gain, depression, impotence—you name it, McFoodstuffs will cause it, according to this tale. Aside from the smugness that accompanies any documentary that takes on the Man, Super Size Me is an entertaining lesson in obesity. Spurlock peppers his noticeably deteriorating health with research on less prominent methods used to infiltrate America’s psyche and, in turn, waistline; advertising dollars, more locations than Starbucks, and the strangely addictive taste of the Big Mac all factor into the grip Micky D’s has on us. So shun those evil, imposing fast-food giants and do something about your health—sit in a cold, dark theater, snuggle up with a big bin of buttered popcorn, and watch a movie.
