Just when you thought you'd finally seen the last "let's get laid before college" coming-of-age tale, along comes Superbad. While this one doesn't necessarily break any new ground, it does make the tired ride a lot more fun than most of its predecessors. With graduation (and the threat of parting ways to attend different universities) looming, best buds Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) set their sights on finally hooking up with their dream girls…if they can make it to the graduation party with the booze. Along for the ride is the über-nerdy McLovin (scene-stealer Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and a couple of dim-witted cops (cowriter/producer Seth Rogen and SNL's Bill Hader). While the movie is much more "fun" than "funny," what sets Superbad apart is the fact that it can be humorous (with all the vulgarity we love) while still managing to tell a story about characters you genuinely give a crap about. Kudos to Rogen for that, and to producer Judd Apatow for redeeming himself after adding too much fluff earlier this year in Knocked Up. Cera and Hill have social awkwardness nailed, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a funnier and nerdier nerd than McLovin. The bad news? All of your douche bag friends who run movie quotes into the ground are going to have a field day with this one.
