Only Texans could reminisce fondly over getting their asses handed to them by 2,400 Mexicans. And only Hollywood could take the story of the men who stood up for what they believed in and turn it into a giant pissing contest. Lt. Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson) and knife-wielding Col. Jim Bowie (Jason Patric) spend the first half of The Alamo fighting over control of the troops, while a Napoleonic Santa Anna moseys on up to the fort to take back Texas. Despite the bickering, you’ll anticipate the impending massacre like a Texas-style execution—and the payoff is definitely worth the $8.50. So is Billy Bob Thornton, who brings life to the legendary Davy Crockett the way only a true redneck could (coonskin cap not included). At a time when war has become all about winning, The Alamo’s historically hopeless slaughter will still have you cheering like Jenna Bush at an open bar.
