The Skinny: The Bank Job, set in early '70s London, follows a real gang of small-time crooks led by Jason Statham as they pull off one of the biggest bank robberies in history, drawing the ire of cops, local mobsters, MI6, and the Royal Family. It's smart, complex, and exciting as hell. Plus, Statham gets to carry a movie without having to take off his shirt.
Reminded Us Of Sexy Beast; Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; The Italian Job (original 1969 British version); Quick Change
The Good: This isn't a typical heist flick; and the acting, plot, and authentic '70s setting make it worth viewing. Plus, there's a lot of nudity, which will help get you through the slow parts.
The Bad: It builds slowly, so you have to endure 45 minutes of setup before it really takes off.
Better Title Please This was possibly the biggest heist in English history, and perhaps world, (they were safe deposit boxes, so no one knows what exactly was taken), but calling it The Bank Job is pretty presumptuous since this is the first we've ever heard of it. They'd be better off calling it The Baker Street Bank Raid, which leads us to the next part of our review
Best Extra: "The Baker Street Bank Raid" is a cool and informative featurette detailing the real heist. Featuring crime scene photos and some of those involved (cops, reporters, and other key players), it proves that the robbery in the film is accurate. Everything else, though, is most likely Hollywood bullshit, but entertaining bullshit.
Digital Copy Included: There's a digital copy of the film included on both the Blu-ray and regular 2-Disc Special Edition DVD. We don't plan on using it, but at least we know it's there.
