The Pitch: While the events of the previous Bourne films unfold, agent Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) and Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz) must outsmart the bureaucrats who want them dead.

What It Really Is: A movie that might seem unnecessary, but is actually pretty great. This one falls somewhere between a reboot and a sequel since it parallels the events of the previous series. It’s a cool twist which allows Legacy to skip an entire origin story with Cross and spin the storylines we all know, without leaning too heavily on the legend of Jason Bourne.

Bourne Upgrades: Renner is a great action star as always and the movie thankfully lets him do his own thing rather than a Damon impression. Weisz takes on a version of Julia Stiles’ role in the previous Bourne films, but since Weisz is miles ahead of Stiles in terms of acting, Dr. Shearing is a lot more compelling. (Sorry, Julia!) We’re big fans of director and co-writer Tony Gilroy — he wrote all the previous Bournes and also directed/wrote Michael Clayton — so we’re happy to see the studios give him a real shot at a blockbuster. As the movie proves, he should be making more of them.

Which Is The Best Bourne of the Bunch: Most people rank the Bourne trilogy in ascending order, with The Bourne Ultimatum unquestionably number one and The Bourne Identity a distant third. We always thought Identity got less credit than it was due. Since we’re always right about pretty much everything--If you see only one movie in your entire life, make it Caddyshack 2!--here’s our Bourne ranking: 1, 3, 2, and Bourne Legacy as fourth right up against Supremacy. It’s not a bad thing – the original trilogy is just too damn good.
