First of all, The Brothers does not have a single original idea in its tale of successful, yet surprisingly commitmentphobic, twentysomething men. All the typical players are present and accounted for: The sensitive guy (Morris Chestnut), the wiseass (Bill Bellamy), the chick magnet (Shemar Moore), and the married guy (D.L. Hughley) spend their time shootin’ hoops, drankin’, and complainin’ about either getting too much or not getting enough. However, The Brothers still manages to be light and funny enough to make it passable. Not to mention that supreme babes like Bring It On’s Gabrielle Union and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’s Tatyana Ali happen to walk around a lot in tight clothing.

There really isn’t much of a story to sum up, but suffice it to say that there’re plenty of scenes involving guys hanging out and giving gloriously raunchy speeches usually containing the words “dick” and “pussy.” It’s like a hipper My Dinner With Andre. But the filmmakers, and the audience, should thank God that D.L. Hughley is on hand to supply some Eddie Murphy-esque rapid-fire witticisms. He salvages the few scenes he gets (in fact, his blooper scenes during the ending credits are more entertaining than the movie). The rest of the cast gets by on very slight plotting and a ho-hum, seen-it-a-million-times ending. But if you want to show your date your sensitive side (and want to hear Hughley call his wife’s mother “St. Suck-a-dick”), then you might want to check out The Brothers.
