Who knew Dumb and Dumber would turn out to be one of the most influential films of all time? The latest attempt to duplicate its success with two inane characters whose collective IQ is in the single digits is written by and costars Saturday Night Live vet Will Forte, who teams up with Will Arnett (Arrested Development) to try and mine laughs by proving they are charter members of the walking brain-dead club. Dean and John Solomon are two dim-witted brothers who keep their comatose father on display in the living room and set out to grant his last wish to become a grandfather. The two decide to find a perfect girl to have a baby with, but pretty much strike out until they become donors at a sperm bank and hook up with a willing victim (Kristen Wiig) who, in need of cash, agrees to be a surrogate mother for their child. Her boyfriend (Chi McBride) is not exactly thrilled, especially as he watches the brothers' good-hearted, if lame, attempts at preparing for fatherhood. There are some yuks along the way, thanks to the comedic skills of both Wills, but not enough to sustain 90 minutes of this predictable stuff. And be warned, the soundtrack pretty much consists of one '80s flashback song, the theme from St. Elmo's Fire, which is played over and over—and over—until you want to run screaming from the theater.
