Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer keeps traveling back to the past, and each time he returns the present is all screwed up? Imagine that as the premise for a movie, sans humor, and starring Demi Moore’s midlife crisis. That’s right, The Butterfly Effect is the stupidest movie…you absolutely have to see. No bullshit. So ridiculously entertaining, you’ll forgive its narrative potholes, brain-dead dialogue, and god-awful performances and wallow in a movie so relentlessly cruel to its characters that you’ll be laughing in horror. A quick rundown? Hows about blown-up babies, dogs set on fire, a love interest turned crack whore, amputations, assault with a movie theater cordon barrier, self-inflicted stigmata, and Eric Stoltz as a pedophile. Despite all this, Ashton Kutcher’s attempts at seriousness are the only truly frightening moments. But, hey, at least Butterfly introduced us to our new favorite movie character: the morbidly obese goth roommate played by Ethan Suplee. This bong-sucking, inexplicable sexual dynamo deserves his own franchise.
