There are some movies that are dumb and fun. There are others that are just dumb. Then there are still others that are so dumb that they actually make you feel stupider for having seen it. Then there are movies like The Fast and the Furious—so inane, in fact, that some guy sitting in the back of the theater shouting random commentary at the screen was more entertaining than anything we were watching on it.

If you’re a serious car fetishist, you might find some of the shoptalk pretty cool, but you’ll have to ignore everything else. Paul Walker stars as (apparently) the best 19-year-old police detective in all of California—even the FBI bows to his unconventional ways—who gets caught up with a group of criminal street racers. Det. Doogie Howser falls for main man Dom’s (Vin Diesel) little sister (Jordana Brewster), but not before bonding with big brother over their shared love of cars and Dom’s troubled past. The Fast and the Furious bursts at the seams with stupid criminals, inept cops (well, it is L.A., after all) and meaningless plot lines. It’s the kind of movie in which a character can’t even swig a beer convincingly. By comparison, last year’s Gone in 60 Seconds looks like Star Wars. As one female theater patron screamed to her girlfriend on the way out, “That was the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen! The only good thing is that Paul Walker is hot!” Which means, fellas, nothing to see here—move along.
