The Forgotten begins as a taut psychological thriller about a seemingly deranged woman, Telly Paretta (Julianne Moore), who can't tell if she's rightfully mourning her dead son or is simply crazy. When items from her son's past suddenly begin disappearing, Telly's psychiatrist (Gary Sinise) tells her she's merely clinging to manufactured memories of a child that never existed. Soon, she becomes frantic, inciting car chases and police brutality that have us wanting more Moore on the run. But with one feeble sci-fi twist, this enthralling movie forgets itself, morphing into a mediocre X-Files rerun complete with mysterious NSA agents and wild conspiracy theories. Whether you enjoy the second half of The Forgotten ultimately hinges on whether you've had your fill of Shyamalan-like plot warps. Odds are you have, making it as memorable for you as it was for us. What were we talking about again?
