Richard Gere puts down his social issues and gives a great performance as a desperate writer who fakes an autobiography of billionaire recluse Howard Hughes. This film, based on a true story, proves the old saying, "The more outrageous the lie the more people will believe it." He convinced a top publishing company to pay him a lot of cash, and he managed to pull it off until the truth finally caught up with him. (No spoiler alert needed… It's clear he got busted, or how else would the story have gotten out?) Some may consider this too abstract or arty, but at least it's not boring. Plus, it's nice seeing Gere play an average schmo for a change… Outside of real life, that is.
