Richard Gere is a former network war correspondent tossed off TV after an on-air meltdown. Terrence Howard is his former cameraman, who left the war zones for a cushy nightly news job in New York. Gere, now a complete down-and-out mess, approaches Howard in Bosnia during the fifth anniversary of the end of the war with a proposition to find and interview one of the most notorious and wanted war criminals. The film is based on an Esquire article (hey, we knew they had to be good for something), and has the excitement and madness of chasing down a huge story no matter how stupid or dangerous it may be. Along the way they encounter some pretty horrible and awkward situations—devoted followers of former warlords, the CIA, a midget loan shark who Gere owes money—but the deeper meaning rests in hunting wanted war criminals that no government really wants to find. Maybe we liked this so much because of its reckless nature, or because we were shocked it didn't suck, but Gere and Howard are on their game and make it a party worth crashing.
