The Kingdom is like a great episode of CSI (or is it NCIS?) capped off with a little Black Hawk Down. Jamie Foxx heads an elite FBI team investigating a major terrorist attack on a community of Americans working in Saudi Arabia. Foxx and his team—rounded out perfectly with the always-solid Chris Cooper, the adorable but tough Jennifer Garner, and the most unlikely action hero ever, Jason Bateman—are met with resistance from the moment they arrive. But they manage to maneuver though one tense situation after another, which culminates in a pants-soiling explosive finale. Director Peter Berg keeps his awesome film streak alive (The Rundown, Friday Night Lights) and proves he knows how to make tight and exciting movies that don't disappoint. This isn't another Hollywood jab at America's handling of the Middle East (at least we didn't think so), but rather a look at how complex our relationship on oil has become. It also smartly shows that not all Arabs are bad guys, but that there are still a bunch that want to kill us as much as we want to kill them.
