We thought this was just another overhyped indie film about metal illness with shades of Memento, but The Lookout is one of the most hypnotic and original movies we've seen in a long time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who's come a long way since playing the kid on 3rd Rock From the Sun, is impressive as the head-injured lead trying to put his life back together after a stupid car accident kills his friends and leaves him with a barely functioning memory and shitloads of guilt. He's doing his best to get his life together when he's pulled into a heist. Jeff Daniels as his blind roommate and Matthew Goode as the smooth badass offer up some of the most realistic performances of the year and push this to the top of the queue for movies you really need to see to know what the hell we're talking about.
