The world is filled with pimps ’n hos. But no matter how glamorous the life may look, The Mack reminds us that it ain’t all gold fronts and mink coats. In the extra featurette “Mackin’ Ain’t Easy,” Max Julien (who starred as Goldie in the movie itself) and others from the set recall the joys of working with Richard Prior (“He was always fucked up on something”) and expound on the movie’s true artistic goals (“Our whole thing was to outdo Superfly”). Some other opinions are brought into the featurette to show the movie’s impact on modern filmmaking—for instance, the Hughes Brothers (Menace II Society, American Pimp) hilariously recite full scenes word for word as they’re taped watching the movie. Check out the DVD to find why so many people love this film—that, and to get the proper enunciation of “punk-ass muthafuckas,” which is also important.
