The man with a thousand tics, faces, and as many voices, Dana Carvey, rears his inimitable goofy head once again in this slapstick misadventure through the pits and recesses of every comedy movie ever made. Just think of one of his Saturday Night Live sketches and multipy by a hundred. The result: a frenetic jaunt through his comedic wardrobe which displays a vast array of alter egos, schticks, racial stereotypes, and the odd funny moment along the way.
Working at his father’s Italian restaurant, Pistachio (Carvey), seems content with his lot until one day his parents are kidnapped by a vengeful criminal mastermind who plans to use Pistachio Senior’s disguise abilities to steal the world’s most valuable artifacts. Through his dead grandfather, Pistachio learns that he too has the power to morph and thus sets about fine-tuning his unique gift so that he can return his mama and papa to safety. With the foxy Jennifer Esposito enlisted as his sexy sidekick, Carvey sets off to prove that he is more than just an “insane, spastic little man.” You have to applaud Carvey’s efforts here, but at times, Disguise wrings the bucket so dry you almost squirm in embarrassment. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a mind-numbing experience with low-brow as the main course, then this just might be your meal ticket. All together now: “Sschwing!”
