When it comes to DVD sets, there are those that are merely serviceable, those that put a little thought into the presentation, and now two that have christened their own category. We'll call it "How crap, we get DVDs with this, too?"
This week, Shout! Factory sent us the G.I. Joe: Complete Series Collector's Set and Transformers: Complete Series "Matrix of Leadership" Collector's Set—two massive collections that take these toy-inspired animated series back to their roots with DVD packaging so amazing you'll want to bust out your old figures and play with it.

Although we covered Shout! Factory's Transformers: Season One 25th Anniversary Edition a while back, consider that an appetizer. The "Matrix of Leadership" Collection not only contains all 98 episodes of the original series digitally restored, but the giant box (which is designed to look like, well, The Matrix of Leadership—the crystal device passed on from Primes to other Primes) also contains a 60-page book and Autobot and Decepticon logo magnets (you can never have too many 'fridge decorations). The discs themselves have brand new special features that reunite most of the original voice cast, show some of the original Hasbro TV commercials, and even have printable scripts! You can't get your hands on anything better without being Michael Bay. You even open the box by gripping each side and pulling away from the center, which comes apart to reveal the booklet and the discs. Humming "The Touch" while you do so is purely optional, but recommended.

Of course, if that's not enough to have you digging through boxes for your old Starscream, Shout! is also hitting you with the ultimate G.I. Joe set. We're talking 95 episodes, including the original Joe miniseries, wrapped up in a mini foot locker. When you crack it open, you get a mock "computer terminal" featuring "video screens" with action stills. Underneath that are the discs, which also bring back the original cast members for some in-depth looks back, dust off the old TV commercials, dig up the original 1963 G.I Joe Toy Fair presentation and even present the original PSAs (not to be confused with the "retooled" PSAs). In addition, you get a 60-page booklet, a Dog Tag USB thumb drive (a useful 1 GB), and…wait for it…rub-on Cobra tattoos. That tightness in your chest is your inner child punching his way out to get his hands on this.
The two sets retail for around $140 each, but you can rest assured you need not ever buy another Transformers of G.I. Joe DVD ever again for that money. And this is a great way to archive the two series so, you know, your kids can enjoy them. Yeah, that's right. Your kids. We're sticking with that.
