Choreographed by Hong Kong action expert Xin Xin Xiong, The Musketeer would have been a lot better without the pesky plot. It could have been a series of groundless vignettes with dueling swashbucklers hanging from ropes, balancing on barrels, and dry humping giraffesno explanation necessary. Instead, they had to base it on a book, attempt historical accuracy and include a fluffy love story. Plus, the villain (Tim Roth) isnt quite evil enough. They say hes merciless, but we recall several instances in which mercy was, in fact, employed. (At one point, he spares the life of a little girl who later tattles his location to our hero, when clearly the protocol was to string her up.) The fighting is great, but its just not worth sitting though the other hour and a half of a generally crappy movie.
