The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps

Release Date:

Star Rating:
★★
Seems like Chris Farley’s death left a big, fat void in Hollywood that special effects just can’t fill. In this flabby sequel to The Nutty Professor, a high-tech fat suit is the real star—and we’re not fans. Eddie Murphy, who takes on six roles and acts as executive producer, ought to know by now that stuffing a movie with fatties doesn’t guarantee boffo yucks. When jokes about farts, sagging tits, and erectile dysfunction fail to hit their mark, you know it’s going to take more than cellulite to pad the screenplay.

This time out, lovable Professor Klump (Murphy) is wooing a comely colleague (Janet Jackson) while fending off the re-emergence of his nefarious alter ego, Buddy Love (Murphy). Once the story gets rolling, the outrageously funky Klump family—Mama, Papa, Ernie, and Grandma (Murphy, Murphy, Murphy, and Murphy)—are trotted out for the expected series of scatological gags. Hilarious in small doses, the Klump characters wear out their welcome surprisingly quickly—even Grandma, by far the funniest Klump, gets upstaged by a giant hamster (not Murphy, thankfully). The make-up effects and computer technology that make all this possible are awe-inspiring, but the movie’s an oversized dud.
