Bummer. We thought wed be getting the story behind the seminal 80s band from Minneapolis. Think about it
Keanu Reeves as Paul Westerberg? How about Peter Boyle as Bob Stinson? Anyway, The Replacements is, in fact, a comedy centered around the NFL players strike in 1987. Players strike. Misfits suit up. Hilarity ensues.
Now, dont get us wrong. Its not a bad movie, just nothing new. Remember when George Lucas rereleased Star Wars with nicer effects? Well, its almost like The Replacements took Necessary Roughness and replaced it with a better cast. (Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman are a lot better than Scott Bakula and Sinbad. Then again, juggling retards are better than Scott Bakula and Sinbad.) But, hey, what do you expect? Theres some originality in the rich guys vs. poor guys subtext, Brooke Langton (as head cheerleader Annabelle) is so hot shed have kept us in our seats if the theater caught fire, and, after Hoosiers, casting Gene Hackman as a coach is almost too perfect. Expect a few laughs (especially from Rhys Ifans Welsh kicker and Jon Favreaus psychotic cop), some action, and an intense sense of deja vu.
