If you went to college, you probably remember the sex, the drugs, the nonstop parties, the WB superstars…No? Well, The Rules of Attraction has them all, and that’s why college life there is better than your experience at DeVry.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ book of the same name, Rules takes place over the course of a year at Camden College, where all sorts of undergrads try to get their freak on and find their true love—all laced with enough narcotics to make the boys from Aerosmith proud. Jessica Biel looks just as good as the campus slut as she does reading the Bible on 7th Heaven, while Dawson somehow manages to convince us that he’s constantly thinking about sex and pot. Eric Stoltz is cringe-inducing as the teacher looking to get together with students for some extracurricular activities (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more), and Shannyn Sossamon is the virgin trying to fend off constant drunken suitors. Director Roger Avary (the cowriter of Pulp Fiction and the director of Killing Zoe) makes this transplanted WB prime-time lineup more evil than you would think possible and explores some of the darker themes—drugs sometimes actually lead to death?—that accompany the idle-rich-kid stereotype. The boys want girls they can’t get with and vice versa, until everyone gets what’s coming to them in the end. You, on the other hand, get to walk away unscathed.
