Directed by: Bryan Bertino
The Skinny: A young couple, alone in a cabin in the woods...has lots of great sex and leaves the next morning refreshed and energized! Just kiddingthe two are stalked and terrorized by freaks in masks. Where the hell are you from?
The Good: The Strangers doesn't weigh itself down with too much backstory or explanation. You get your cannon fodderwe mean "main characters"and then you get your psychos. Cue screaming and loud noises.
The Bad: The movie's sole intention is to "freak you out" with the "randomness" of violenceyou see, the couple was chosen for no reason at all by nuts who apparently just kill people for shits and gigglesbut instead you end up not caring about any of it at all. Also, can all horror directors PLEASE stop equating "scares" with "startling people with loud noises"? Are you seriously content with making a film with all the psychological impact of a backfiring car?
"Boo!" The "quiet, quiet, LOUD" cliché was used so often and set up so obviously during our screening of The Strangers that audience members were actually shouting "boo" in time with each alleged scare. They then laughed. FYI: This was supposed to be a scary movie.
Theater, DVD, or TNT in Five Years? Is this movie even going to be in theaters? Next!
