Ben Affleck steps into Harrison Ford’s Florsheims as a less-wizened Jack Ryan, defending America from fascist terrorists bent on detonating a nuke on our soil. Post–September 11, the operative word here is soil. On top of the sensitivity issues, the featurettes are an annoying cast member–by–cast member ass-kissing (like Bridget Moynahan’s nauseating drooling while discussing her bedroom scene with Affleck). Director Phil Alden Robinson defends himself, the film, and its unedited post–September 11 release—the whole time maintaining that he achieved his goal, which was to do a responsible film about the dangers of terrorism. Duh.
