The Skinny: Previously available on HD-DVD, the Ultimate Matrix Collection arrives on Blu-Ray, bringing with it hi-def versions of The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, The Matrix: Revolutions, and The Animatrix .
The Good: The Matrix in hi-def is an absolute necessity for any self-respecting DVD collection. The transfer to Blu-Ray is so gorgeous, it's liking watching the movie for the first time. Sure, you also get saddled with the lesser sequels, but at least you can skip to the parts worth watching (the Reloaded freeway chase, the siege of Zion). All four discs come nicely loaded with extras, too, which feature rare appearances by the reclusive Wachowskis.
The Bad: Not muchthis set is pretty much a reward for anyone who waited to see the end of the format war. if you rush to buy it on HD-DVD Ha ha.
Best Extra: The Wachowskis offer up a daring second commentary track on all three of the movies featuring a collection of critics not completely sold on the franchise's quality. What does it prove? That most critics are more boring to listen to than they are to read.
