Release Date:
07/03/2008
Directed by: Jonathan Levine
The Skinny: The Wackness, set in Manhattan in 1994, follows recent high school grad Luke (Josh Peck) as he spends his summer selling weed to an eccentric shrink (Ben Kingsley), while simultaneously macking on the shrink's adopted daughter (Olivia Thirlby).
The Good: Although it smacks of Kids 2: The Quickening, The Wackness soon establishes its own laid-back, off-kilter, and completely endearing vibe. You won't realize you were nostalgic for early '90s rap music until you see it; and the performances are great across the board. It also manages to be touching without being unbearably cheesy.
The Bad: We're kind of hard-pressed to come up with… Oh, OK. Method Man's Jah-MAKIN accent is weak. But, yeah, otherwise solid.
Ya Heard? You may have heard this movie referred to as "the one in which Ben Kingsley makes out with Mary-Kate Olsen." Yep, it's true.
Theater, DVD, or TNT in Five Years? If you live in New York or Los Angeles, go see it. It won't open elsewhere until later, so you may have to wait for the DVD.
