Since we know time is money, here's a quick handy reference guide to recent DVD releases that should be on your radar and, in many cases, on your shelf. Immediately.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Blu-Ray)
Release Date:April 6
What it is: In move worthy of George Lucas, Warner Bros finally brings the theatrical versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy to Blu-Ray, and then makes sure to include in the special features a promo for the upcoming Extended Versions Blu-Ray release. Hobbit fans better clear out that guest room to make way for their hundred-strong DVD collection consisting of one franchise.
Why you need it: If you don't mind that the Extended Versions are actually more coherent and just want some HD Orc action, then you will be more than satisfied with this release. All kidding aside, the transfer is gorgeous and great care has obviously been taken with each and every detail. Special effects that were impressive in standard definition are jaw-dropping now—the Balrog sequence and the Cave Troll attack in particular stand out. However, all the work that went into honing the look of the movies clearly left no time for new special features. All you're getting are the same ones you got on standard DVD. In short, this is a great Blu-Ray release, but it's kind of up to you to decide if it's worth jumping in now or waiting for the Extended release. Either way, you'll either be getting a pretty spectacular home viewing experience now, or you'll be getting one…eventually. Your call.
