This Week in DVDs: December 15, 2009

Since we know time is money, here's a quick handy reference guide to recent DVD releases that should be on your radar and, in many cases, on your shelf. Immediately.

Inglourious Basterds (Blu-Ray)
Release Date: December 15
What it is: Quentin Tarantino's World War II epic that is equal parts perplexing and amazing. Starring Brad Pitt as a U.S. soldier who loves killin' himself some Nat-zees.
Why you need it: A second viewing serves Basterds well, as its stand-out scenes (the opening, the bar sequence, pretty much anything with Christoph Waltz's Hans Landa come to think of it) actually play even better when you know what's going to happen. Tarantino gives the DVD extras a lot of love, too—we especially like the faux EPK for the Nazi propaganda film Nation's Pride (directed by Eli Roth). It won't unseat Pulp Fiction, but it's a return to form for QT.

The Hangover
Release Date: December 15
What it is: The sleeper comedy hit of the year, The Hangover follows Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis as they tear around Vegas trying to piece together their hazy memories of the night before and find their missing buddy.
Why you need it: Although this is destined to be on permanent TBS rotation at some point really soon, why settle for the edited for TV version? Although the "Unrated" tag on the DVD is, like all the others, a useless marketing ploy (there's a few extra minutes here and there, but nothing necessary or even noteworthy), this is nonetheless a movie you should have in your library.
