This Week in DVDs: July 28, 2009

Since we know time is money, here's a quick handy reference guide to recent DVD releases that should be on your radar and, in many cases, on your shelf. Immediately.

Watchmen: The Director's Cut (Blu-Ray)
Release Date: July 21
What it is: Adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel about the private lives of costumed vigilantes in an alternate universe 1980s America. You've either been told, "It's amazing" or "it's boring and there's a dude with a blue schlong."
Why you need it: The effects look great on Blu-Ray, but hardcore fans will be disappointed by the meager special features.

Coraline (Blu-Ray)
Release Date: July 21
What it is: Stop-motion animated movie about a girl who falls into a twisted world full of people with button eyes.
Why you need it: It's a refreshingly dark children's tale, and it's better than Nightmare Before Christmas because it's sans musical numbers.

300: The Complete Experience (Blu-Ray)
Release Date: July 21
What it is: Heavily green-screened take on the Frank Miller comic about 300 Spartan soldiers who bring the pain to the Persian Army.
Why you need it: Well, this is its Blu-Ray debut, for one. Second, the special features (mostly pulled from the HD-DVD release) are solid all around.

This is Spinal Tap (Blu-Ray)
Release Date: July 28
What it is: The greatest…if you will, "rockumentary"…ever committed to film. An enduring classic.
Why you need it: Brand new special features show the boys have aged poorly, but their humor has not.

Green Lantern: First Flight
Release Date: July 28
What it is: A feature-length (and PG-13 rated) animated feature starring DC Comics' St. Patrick's Day-colored superhero.
Why you need it: DC Animated has been churning out good stuff, and the odds are favorable that this will end up being better than the Ryan Reynolds live action movie.

Fast & Furious (Blu-Ray)
Release Date: July 28
What it is: The fourth installment in the cars and crooks series. An amazing accomplishment for a franchise that had half a movie's worth of actual plot.
Why you need it: You kinda don't. But the cars and the girls are purty. Unfortunately, the action disappoints even more vividly in HD.

Miss March
Release Date: July 28
What it is: The guys from The Whitest Kids You Know embark on a horny teen comedy that is equal parts House Bunny and Road Trip.
Why you need it: Despite the lame premise, it's got more laughs than you might expect. Horsedick.MPEG for the win.
