Only a select few directors can hope to have an Academy Award-nominated flick during their careers, so it’s all the more amazing that Steven Soderbergh made two in one year. One of those, Traffic, was released on DVD about a year ago. That’s a shame, because the definitive Traffic DVD is following close on its heels.

The Criterion Collection edition is beyond thorough—it does in 2 discs what $30,000 and four years in film school can’t accomplish. Every aspect of this drug epic’s production is laid out and examined, with everything from editing demos to deleted scenes (which, unlike most movies, are actually pretty interesting) to multi-faceted commentaries included to do the job. Soderbergh himself said that DVDs are a great teaching tool, and he’s followed through here. Film buffs will eat this up, and anyone who’s ever wondered, say, what a sound editor does, will find their answer and more. And just for fun, the “trading card” feature gives stats and photos of some of U.S. Custom’s top drug-sniffing hounds. Hey, we’ll trade you a “Buster” rookie card for that “Black Jack.”
