In the grand tradition of buddy cop films like Turner and Hooch, K-9, and the oft-overlooked K-911, Denzel Washington plays veteran narc to Ethan Hawke’s drooling rookie as he spends his first 24 hours in the corrupt world of undercover investigation. Although he hasn’t yet mastered Tom Hanks’ playful banter or James Belushi’s girth, Washington gives an incredible performance as a man teetering on the edge between cop and criminal, and Hawke is equally believable as the “rookie with a heart of gold.” Hawke even manages to look realistically uncomfortable toking dope, which seems a true feat of acting if we’ve ever seen one.

The movie sometimes drags and includes several false-alarm endings that make the real conclusion a bit of a let down. But the dialogue is snappy even when the pace is sluggish, and the cast, including Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre in bit parts, does a bang-up job—get it? heh…ahem—of keeping things interesting.
