This so-called romantic comedy about screwed up Manhattanites is a Woody Allen–lite attempt to be witty and urbane that fails miserably. Julianne Moore plays a Broadway star married to a stay-at-home dad (David Duchovny), and their lives intertwine with her loser brother (Billy Crudup) and his novelist fiancée (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Full of sitcom talk that fails to resonate, this dreary enterprise is full of annoying people you just want to shake some sense into. Moore is always attractive, and Crudup playing a moron is mildly watchable, but the prodigiously talented Gyllenhaal is simply wasted here, and Duchovny should just fire his agent. Trust the Maxim. Take a pass.
