It's the documentary they don't want you to see. And by "they," we mean the 82 percent of all NFL Draft entrants pumping gas by Round 8 every year. 2 Days in Apriloriginally concocted by an agent who then tried to thwart the film's release after his kids got picked lastfollows four pro hopefuls (known to insiders as "propefuls!") through the 14 weeks between the bowls and the Draft. Included is agency-run mental and physical training, the senior bowl, the NFL combine, and dorky white media coaches, but it's the Draft itself where the film gets brutal. As its subjects watch players from Northwest Missouri, Abilene Christian, and Alabama State called before them at Draft day parties full of family and friends, they watch themselves slide further into obscurityand a lower income bracket.
All told, it's a lot to try to cram into 90 minutes, and it probably could have been longer. And, of course, in the process of chronicling this kind of colossal disappointment, the film naturally lacks a big-name draftee. But this is the first real look at the process of its kind, and if you're the kind of sadist who tunes into ESPN's Draft coverage for the crestfallen college kids, you won't be disappointed. Not as much as they are, anyway.
