If Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood didn’t have you furiously fumbling for the Zoloft, then this histrionic, menopausal schmaltzfest will have you begging your doctor for hormone replacement therapy. Recently divorced, suffering severe writer’s block, and fearful of another solitary Blockbuster Friday night on the couch, 35-year-old Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) decides to take her chances with a friend’s offer of a free trip to Italy. Unshackled from her recent turbulent past, and acting like a possessed woman with only weeks to live, she impulsively buys a rundown villa in the countryside and sets about creating her own rustic paradise. Things start off slowly, but soon enough, the new girl in town is disrupting and corrupting the locals with her irrepressible Americanness, all the while whining and pining for a male suitor to complete her idyllic jigsaw. It’s not all tile rooftops and gelato though; there is ample opportunity to increase your Italian vocabulary and indulge your love of kittens. On second thought, maybe having a penis isn’t so great after all.
