This one sat on our desk all week as we debated whether or not we wanted to give it a try. And to be honest, it didn't have a lot of things working in its favor. The plot follows four independent women dealing with the struggles of their weird and complicated lives. Meh. It's in Spanish, so we knew we'd be reading the whole time. If it wasn't for the smoking-hot (and Oscar-nominated) Penélope Cruz, it might've never left the office. We were surprised that, despite the aforementioned hang-ups, there was a pretty interesting story. Raimunda (Cruz) and her sister Sole have believed for three years that their mother and father died in a house fire. When the mother appears to Sole to clean up some unfinished business, everything gets a little twisted. With several other subplots (some engaging, others disturbing) weaving through the supernatural mystery, the end result is a enjoyable and sometimes funny (Cruz snooping around her sister's home swearing she smells her mother's farts) film that's sentimental enough to please and impress your lady if you're brave enough to recommend it. Just be sure and remember that every few minutes you might want to stop gawking at a gorgeous-as-ever Cruz and read a few of the subtitles to keep up.
