Horror-meister Wes Craven has put his horror-spoof career on hold to remake Flatliners. Traumatized by the suicide of her childhood friend, who claimed that They were coming back from his childhood get him, psychology student Julia (Laura Regan) has re-occurences of the night terrors that she’s had her whole life. After hanging with friends of her recently-offed buddy, they realize that they’re suffering the same mental problems and unite to fend off the menacing creatures. Although Craven killed us with too many clichés—the jangling ornaments, bashing rain, power shortages—he does introduce a novel creature in the form of molten, gangly limbs covered in a thick tar substance. Scary in parts, They takes a long time to ignite and is more Critters than Night of the Living Dead—but it’s weird enough to satisfy genuine horror fans.
