Thanks to the internet and the rise of the fanboy-catering superhero movie, the end credit bonus scene has grown in popularity. Instead of making beelines for the parking lot, audiences now sit and wait to squeeze every last cent out of their $10 admission fee. In some cases they get an extra laugh, others they get a cool teaser for an upcoming movie, and still others they get an answer to a hanging story thread. Here are 10 of our favorite post-movie treats you might not have seen coming.
10. A Knight's Tale
What better way to end this anachronistic take on Medieval legends than with a chorus of…farts? Those who stuck around after the end credits learned a very important thing: That Wat's (Alan Tudyk) butt trumpet is no match for Kate's (Laura Fraser).
9. Daredevil
So what, exactly, was the fate of Colin Farrell's Bullseye? Well, he's not as dead as you think (smart move, considering he's the only good thing in this otherwise crap movie). Those who stayed for the end credits saw a convalescing Bullseye up to his old tricks…
8. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
One of the most well-known end credit bonuses. After the end credits play out (alongside another bonus scene showing how Mr. Rooney made it back to school), Ferris returns to admonish the audience for wanting more. He's right—you've just had a full movie, a bonus end credit scene, and now a bonus bonus end credit scene. Go home!
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
The movie proper, of course, ended with newly minted pirate Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) enjoying some sand-caked nookie with eternal love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). End of story, right? Nope. After a good thirty minutes worth of credits (you think those sea monsters animated themselves?) we get a "Ten Years Later" title card and the living, breathing product of summer lovin'.
6. The House on Haunted Hill
In this underrated horror remake (seriously, Geoffrey Rush's performance alone is worth the watch), we are treated to one final dose of nastiness before the house lights turn on. Through grainy, black and white footage, we see the ghosts of the House's former inmates performing a little open heart surgery on Rush's Stephen Price and his equally diabolical wife Evelyn (Famke Janssen).
5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Like Daredevil, this is another one of those "So what actually happened to the bad guy?" moments. See, you'd think that former mutant assassin-turned-multi-powered-uber mutant Deadpool would be, well, dead after getting his noggin artfully removed from his body. And you'd be wrong, bub.
4. Napoleon Dynamite
Those who kept their asses in their seats after the end credits of this goofball cult classic were rewarded with a moment of mushy sweetness. That's right, the wedding of Napoleon's brother Kip and his beloved Lafawnduh.
3. Iron Man
The kick off of Marvel Studio's grand master plan. You see, they want to tie their movie universe together just like they do in the comics, with characters interacting and eventually teaming up. And it all hinges on one key figure tasked with bringing them all together: S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). At the end of the first Iron Man, he briefly appears to introduces himself, as well as a little something called "The Avenger Initiative."
2. Idiocracy
Earlier in this Mike Judge classic, prostitute Rita (Maya Rudolph) claims that her pimp, Upgrayedd (spelled thusly: U-P-G-R-A-Y-E-D-D with two D's for a double-dose of this pimping), is so intent on collecting his money that he'll find his own time machine just to track her down. After the ending credits, we see that she was right. A giant cryogenic container like the ones that housed Rita and Joe (Luke Wilson) for hundreds of years pops open, and out steps Upgrayedd, determined to scour the future for his cash.
1. Iron Man 2
At the end of Iron Man, Nick Fury showed up to tease the concept of a super team called The Avengers. Well, we know that Iron Man will eventually be one of them, but what about the rest of the group? Marvel uses another end credit teaser to answer part of that question (and promote their next big movie). We see S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) arriving in New Mexico (the "Land of Enchantment" - geddit?) and finding a certain iconic Marvel weapon: Mjolnir, the fabled hammer of the thunder god Thor.
