Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Release Date:

MPAA Rating:
MPAA: R
Star Rating:
★★
Directed by: Kevin Smith

The Skinny: Kevin Smith takes that one scene from Clerks where Randall rattles off all those funny porn titles and stretches it into a two hour-movie. For help, Smith watched the 40 Year Old Virgin and pretty much cut-and-pasted most of the cast (even the foul-mouthed Pakistani dude shows up as…the exact same character).

The Good: There's a chuckle or two here, but Smith has officially reached the bottom of his shallow creative barrel. If Clerks II was a greatest hits record, this is a Judd Apatow cover album. Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks aren't given much to work with, but they at least manage to make Zack and Miri likeable until they eventually get jumped by the script and left for dead.

The Bad: Smith likes to think that he balances his poop and pee jokes with "heart," but his love story is more third-grade than the jokes. Forget the tired-ass, eye-rollingly predictable sitcom set-up of "best friends/roommates who secretly love each other"—if Smith actually believes a real woman would be aglow with love after being fucked in the back room of a coffee shop…on camera…in front of strippers and assorted weirdos…then he is even more emotionally retarded than we thought (again, all forgivable if the movie were funnier). This is the movie equivalent of a stunted 35-year-old still wearing his high school varsity jacket.

Google Yourself: If you really want to see real-life porn star Katie Morgan's tits, pocket the money you were going to spend on this and hit the Web. If you can't find them in the span of one search query, you're hopeless.

Theater, DVD, or TNT in Five Years? It's a rental, but don't expect too much. There are better porn parodies and much funnier raunchfests to be found.
