Guided by Voices ringleader Bob Pollard may appear to be a borderline-alcoholic ex-fourth-grade teacher from Ohio, but in his own mind he’s Roger Daltrey. His delusions are our good fortune: On Isolation Drills, he pounds out British Invasion rock with a conviction unheard since the ’60s. Though tin-can production plagued GBV’s early recordings, as drums crash and guitars ring across tracks like “Fair Touching” and “Glad Girls,” they’re primed to play stadiums. If only someone would give them the chance.
