When she first surfaced, Juliana Hatfield got as much attention for revealing she was a 25-year-old virgin as for her spiky post-punk pop. Eight years later, and several albums past her Blake Babies cult fame, Beautiful Creature finds her without the virginity or the noise, but only rarely missing either. Whether mourning a junkie ex-boyfriend (“I say it’s me or drugs/You choose drugs”) or merely missing having sex with him (“You once had me on that floor…sweet lay”), Hatfield finds humor in her relationship hell and, in doing so, keeps even her laziest acoustic strummers from getting bogged down or boring. File this one under Waifs with Attitude.
