Country-rock shitkicker Steve Earle’s been through jail, rehab, and more car wrecks than Dale Earnhardt, but he’s not dead yet. His latest, a harrowing blend of country, folk, bluegrass, and rock, bares the scars of his personal battles. Across songs of survival that echo with the spirit of many of his heroes (Cash, Dylan, Springsteen, and even the Beatles), it’s Earle’s own gruff voice that comes through loud and clear, making him sound like a guy who’s been to hell and come back with a really good story to tell.
