Despite his role as axe-slinger for formative alt-rockers Jane’s Addiction (and briefly, the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Dave Navarro is perhaps best known for living the decadent, self-destructive rock star life to its fullest. So how could someone who seems to live such an interesting life make such a dull album? His solo debut isn’t that bad; it’s just, well, ordinary. Down-and-out rock dramas like “Rexall” and “Sunny Day” give Navarro a chance to prove he’s got a surprisingly adept voice, but too many songs here—particularly “Everything” and “Not For Nothing”—sound like Stone Temple Pilots knock-offs. As a lyricist, he…makes a good guitar player: He can’t seem to turn his wild rides into anything but clichés (“I only feel alone when I’m with you”). Then again, maybe underneath all the sex, drugs, and leather pants, Navarro just doesn’t have a hell of a lot to say.
