Anyone who swindled themselves tickets to see Radiohead’s summer tour discovered something rather surprising about the songs from the band’s last two records: given the chance, they can actually rock. That’s what makes this live mini-LP better than it has any right to be. Meandering tracks that had come off like self-indulgent wank-a-thons on Kid A (“The National Anthem”) and Amnesiac (“I Might Be Wrong”) suddenly sound like soaring, urgent rock epics here. A previously unreleased ballad (“True Love Waits”), apparently an outtake from the Kid A/Amnesiac sessions (though it sounds more like an outtake from The Bends) closes this sucker in style, ensuring that, as a live album, it’s much more than just blood-sucking, fan-milking souvenir swag.
