If you’re concerned about Prince and his grip on sanity, don’t be put off by the overt spirituality of his first glyph-free album in nearly a decade. Beneath the religious mumbo jumbo, The Rainbow Children is really the Purple One’s attempt to rejoin another holy trinity—James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and George Clinton—and it might make a believer of you, too. Unrepentantly funky, Rainbow is a brassy blast of a revival that deserves to revive Prince’s career—if listeners can just get past the sermon.
