Once an artist with the potential to bridge the gap between rock and country, Sheryl Crow now seems perfectly content in her niche between middle-of-the-road banality and utter mediocrity. Her first studio album in four years is a collection of interchangeable ballads ready to waft straight into the next Tommy Hilfiger commercial; despite a parade of highly credible collaborators including Liz Phair and Stevie Nicks, only the cold, sparingly produced “Weather Channel,” with Emmylou Harris, really makes you wake up and take notice. Aw, Sheryl, c’mon.
