Eagles of Death Metal, the latest side project from Queens of the Stone Age honcho Josh Homme (who plays drums here), sounds nothing like either the Eagles or death metal. Instead, Peace Love Death Metal is all about rocknroll strut. On the punkabilly stomp Speaking in Tongues, frontman Jesse Hughes sounds like the Big Bopper on crystal meth, swaggering over big, nasty guitar riffs and the occasional blare of car horns. Guitars shuffle through So Easy like they got lost on the way to Keith Richards house, while Hughes sings along in a taunting falsetto. Homme proves more than capable on the drums, swinging the beat through the dark, bluesy Flames Go Higher, conjuring a badass Mississippi mojo groove. It goes without saying that nothing here is taken too seriously, but all the clowning never undermines the Eagles genuine rockin heart.
